TREE: Transition to efficient electrified forestry transport

The project addresses the societal challenge of efficiently transitioning to electrified heavy road transport. TREE focuses on the forestry industry, which accounts for 20% of Sweden’s heavy road transport.

Background

A shift to electrified vehicles in the forestry sector would have a significant impact on reducing Sweden’s CO2 emissions, while also generating transferable results and knowledge that can be applied to other industries. Achieving fossil-free transport requires a systemic transition, where we collaboratively develop business models, logistics planning, and technology.

Project Description

The overall goal of the project is to ensure that 50% of new forestry trucks are electrified by 2030. To achieve this, a system demonstrator will be developed across seven sites. The demonstrator will include innovative technical solutions, business models tailored for electrified transport, and the testing of planning strategies and tools. The project will also build knowledge on the impact of policies and external factors, as well as develop an industry-wide roadmap for transition.

Skogforsk, the forestry sector’s research institute, is coordinating the project together with the network organization CLOSER at Lindholmen Science Park. The project involves an additional 20 partners, including forestry companies, logistics firms, transport operators, charging infrastructure providers, technology companies, and universities.

The project runs from November 20, 2023, to November 19, 2026, with support from the FFI (Strategic Vehicle Research and Innovation) program at Vinnova.

Purpose and Goals

Vision: Efficient, electrified forestry transport as part of the green transition.

Purpose: To accelerate the electrification of forestry road transport by removing system barriers.

Overall Goal: Contribute to ensuring that 50% of new forestry trucks are electrified by 2030. Electrifying 50% of truck transport corresponds to a CO2 emission reduction of approximately 260,000 tons per year.

Project Goals:
• Iterative demonstration and evaluation of logistics solutions with electrified vehicles.
• Knowledge on charging station placement and the role of mobile energy hubs within the system.
• Verified insights into strengths and weaknesses of different logistics and transport planning strategies.
• Development of business models, co-created within the value chain.
• Establish a holistic system understanding.
• Accelerate the transformation towards electrified transport beyond the project partners.
