On March 28th, ITRL welcomed its network of researchers and partners to a day dedicated to sharing progress, insights, and reflections from ongoing and completed ITRL research projects. The seminar brought together a mix of ITRL members and collaborators working across the fields of sustainable transport, automation, and system transformation. The goal was simple: create space for exchanging ideas, learning from each other’s work, sparking new conversations and, more importantly, collaboration!

The seminar began in the morning with a session focused on electrification, automation, and resilient freight transport. Researchers shared models for decision-making in electrifying forestry road freight, strategies for maintaining uptime in autonomous vehicle systems, and future scenarios for Swedish freight transport using electric and driverless trucks. Next, AI and automation in transport, where projects explored how social robots could serve as helpful hosts on autonomous buses, and how advanced machine learning techniques like graph neural networks might be applied to traffic classification and control. Midday, the seminar welcomed keynote speaker Prof. Dr. Cristina Olaverri, who gave a thought-provoking talk on carbon-neutral and environmentally friendly mobility, offering both challenges and hopeful directions for the future of transport systems. The afternoon turned to smart and sustainable mobility systems, with presentations ranging from integrated electric public transport and freight-energy interactions to personalized passenger information systems, urban freight research, and studies on walkability supported by sidewalk robots.
